About

Ever feel like there’s got to be a better way?

You would love to live in a beautiful eco-friendly home and be able to do things for yourself. You know it’s more important than ever to live lightly on the Earth, for yourself and your family and for everyone else too.

You wonder: Could you grow some of your own food? Learn to make things? Can you ferment or can food without poisoning your family? Maybe get some chickens and keep them in a cute little coop?

But you don’t know how to start. What are the most important things you can do to be more sustainable now? Aren’t there some fun crafty things people used to do?

How do you find the time when it’s even hard to get the dishwasher emptied?

It’s not like you can just move to a cabin in the woods. You have a regular house in a regular town with regular neighbors. You have responsibilities — a family, a job, a commute, a schedule. It would be lovely to sit and knit with yarn you spun from wool you sheared from sheep you raised from lambs, but who has the time?

I get it

Me

I’m Susan. I have a family and a job with a commute and a full schedule. I’ve been a single mom making a sustainable home without much money, and now I’m a remarried mom of five. Lots of days it’s hard to just get the dishes done and keep up with the laundry.

I’ve been growing and making since I was old enough to stand on a stool and help my grandma can peaches from her tree. It’s always been fun, but my career in the environmental field has shown me it’s serious too.

Now I grow our mushrooms and preserve the food my husband and I grow in our Colorado garden. We make and mend and reuse and recycle. We have a teensy tiny flock of chickens, a mealworm colony (for the chickens), solar panels, and rainwater to water our garden. We are in the middle of a DIY kitchen remodel with home-crafted cabinets and countertops milled from a tree that grew in our backyard.

I understand the satisfaction that comes from doing things yourself and sharing your new skills with others — even in the middle of a regular modern life. There’s never been a more important time to green your home.
